The history of the computer and the history of The Internet is a fascinating story of idealism and imagination combined with scientific prowess. We are all indebted to the computing and Internet pioneers. The history of the computer, the history of The Internet and the history of The World Wide Web is a story of imagination, passion, bravery and idealism. The early pioneers of computing and The Internet wanted to change the world for the better. By and large, they were idealists with little interest in the exploitation of their ideas for commercial purposes. Their sense of idealism continues to this day in the principles of the Open Source Movement where code is made available to anyone for free. We are all indebted to the legacy of organizations such as Xerox PARC, IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Intel, ARPA, RAND, CERF and MIT. There were also many pioneering figures such as J.C.R. Licklider, Bob Taylor, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Roberts, Paul Baran, Frank Heart, Doug Engelbert, Will Crowther, Bob Kahn, Jon Postel, Steve Crocker, Vint Cerf and Tim Berners Lee, among many others, who each carried the torch forward for the computer, The Internet or the Web. For those who wish to research these subjects, we can recommend two scholarly but readable books: For a readable history of how the PC developed and the place of Silicon Valley pioneers in computer progress, you would enjoy reading: Accidental Empires ![]() For a fascinating account of how The Internet came about and the visionary individuals who made it possible, an inspiring book is: Where Wizards Stay Up Late: the Origins of The Internet
